Gallery Hop / ギャラリー巡り
As you walk across Shinjuku for Peace, you’re invited to stop at any/all of the 9 photography galleries along the way. All participating galleries have very graciously welcomed PHOTOPEACE participants to view ongoing exhibitions. While supplies last, you are invited to collect one extra bonus roll for min ¥500 at each gallery (Note: Limit 1 extra roll per photographer per gallery. Please use exact change and do not ask gallerist for change – THANK YOU!)
写真の力でピースに。新宿の9つの写真ギャラリーを一緒に巡りながら、フォトウォークを楽しみましょう。今回参加してくださったギャラリーでは、開催中の素晴らしい写真展示を見られるだけではなく、各ギャラリーに置かれたフィルムを¥500〜/個で更にゲットすることができます。(注意: お釣りはありません。1ギャラリーにつき、一人一個までとします)
IMPORTANT: Please kindly be respectful to galleries, exhibiting photographers, and resident neighbors. Please visit in small groups; if crowded be please wait in turns outside, and do not overwhelm staff, gallerists, or neighborhoods. The exhibition showcases John’s photos captured from 20 years ago during his Japanese studies at university, and depicts scenes which stood out to him during his first year of photography, alluding to the Japanese expression, “Ten-years is one lifetime ago”.
ジョン サイパルが20年前に日本の大学に留学していた頃に撮影した写真。「十年は一昔」という日本の諺から「昔」を二つ並べたタイトルにした。

「Vintage」
Very old houses remain throughout Tokyo’s densely packed neighborhoods and streets of tall buildings. Kobayashi describes these small and nameless houses as “vintage” and hopes to give a glimpse of the history of the Showa era.
ビルの密集する東京に残る古い民家。この名も無い小さな建物をVintageと呼び、昭和の歴史を垣間見させてくれる。

Photos capture the moment of daily life in Tokyo as well as Akita, Fukushima, Kochi, Ehime, and Kozushima, where Shinya Sekita traveled. The images he collects are like nuanced tones of visual dropplets.
関田晋也が旅をした秋田、福島、高知、愛媛、神津島、それに東京での日々の暮らしの中から雫の滴り落ちる微かな音色を拾い集めるように撮られた写真です。

「祈りの道 / Road of prayer」
“Gochak” is the New Year’s festival in the Ladakh region of India where Buddhist devotees crawl along the ground over days and great distances and at high altitudes in the cold of winter. The images exhibited are printed on handmade Locta paper from Nepal. You can experience a part of Tibetan culture with video and music.
厳寒の冬に標高三千米超のインド・ラダック地方で他者の祈りのために行われる、幾日もかけて地面を這って増院に向かう正月行事”ゴチャック”。プリント用紙はネパールの手漉きロクタ紙を使用。映像・BGMとともにチベット文化の一端を体感できる。

Free Film / フィルムについて:
A beloved member of the film photography community and Photohoku supporter tragically succumbed to mental despair not long ago, leaving behind a collection of film and cameras that was entrusted to us with the hope it be put to positive use, and aligned with Photohoku’s and the beneficiary’s values. We HOPE this will be a fitting tribute to the Photographer’s life and legacy.
数年前に写真コミュニティで愛されていたメンバーの一人が、命を断ちました。
ご家族や友人から、彼女の残した膨大なフィルムを何かよいことのために使って欲しいと連絡があり、現在PHOTOHOKUが譲り受けています。 今回彼女のフィルムを使わせてもらうことで、一人のフォトグラファーが生きた証とレガシーにつながればと願っています。
Note: All participants can receive 10 rolls of film at the PhotoPeace Registration at Totem Pole. They can collect additional rolls as the various galleries for additional donations. There will be both 35mm and 120 film formats. Consider all the film deadstock and for “experimental” purposes. If image results are critical, best to use fresh stock! Have a backup plan if you need!
注意: 参加者全員10個のフィルムを集合場所であるトーテムポールにて受け取れます。また各ギャラリーで寄付していただくと、追加フィルムをもらえます。35mmと120mmのフィルムを用意していますが、長期保存されていたため、期限切れのデッドストックとお考えください。あくまでも実験的な仕上がりを楽しんでください! 出来上がりにこだわる方は、ご自身でもフィルムを用意するなどご検討ください。
Project Background / プロジェクトについて
“PHOTOPEACE” is an effort to use photography passion as a means to promote Peace! It was born from the “PHOTOHOKU” effort, an ongoing volunteer effort, started in response to Japan’s Earthquake and Disaster of 2011 that uses the act of photo-giving as a means to help those in need. It has also been inspired by previous Community PhotoWalks, “PHOTOHOPE” and “PHOTOHOHOHO”.
PHOTOPEACE (フォトピース) は、写真の力とその情熱をピースのために使うプロジェクトです。2011年の東日本大震災で、写真を失くした方々に新たな写真をプレゼントするため始めたPHOTOHOKU (フォトウホク) が元となっています。過去に行われたコミュニティフォトウォークのPHOTOHOPE (フォトホープ) 、PHOTOHOHOHO (フォトホホホ)も同じプロジェクトの一つです。
Action / 活動について
Building on past Photowalk efforts in which we’ve rallied photography friends to walk across Tokyo for good causes, by offering free film for all who joined, we aim to re-interpret our next challenge and method in the following ways:
過去のPhotohoku活動や、第1回PHOTOHOPE2021のフォトウォークを踏まえて、次回のPHOTOHOHOHOの活動方法を以下のように再定義しました:
- Host PHOTOPEACE Photowalk and Gallery Hop with photographers traversing Shinjuku while visiting many of its famed cluster of photography galleries along the way / 第1回PHOTOHOHOHOでは、都内のクリスマスイルミネーションに参加者を連れて行くフォトウォークを開催する。
- Distribute free film (from our beneficiary’s collection) to all who participate. / 参加者全員にフィルム を無料でプレゼントする。
- Assemble, walk, and photograph in groups across Shinjuku to raise money for peace-building inniatives / グループになり都内を歩いて写真を撮るイベントを行い、寄付金 (参加費) を募り、日本の児童養護施設の子ども達にプレゼントを渡す資金とする。
- Encourage photographers to focus on peace, be inspired by peace, inspire others with peace, and to BE PEACE! / 日本の児童養護施設についての周知を行い、参加した方にも何か気づきや関心をもってもらい、今後の支援やボランティア活動につながって欲しい。写真の力とその情熱が少しでも優しい未来につながりますように。

注意: 参加者としてではなく、運営ボランティアとしてお手伝いいただける方がいれば、その旨お知らせください。
Walking Notes / 歩く際の注意:
It’s a long walk! Participants needn’t walk the full length. Go your pace and distance. Walk some or the entire length. Start at TPPG or anywhere along the way. Train or taxi the final stretch as needed. Have fun. Focus thoughts on Peace!
長距離になります。ゴールはあくまでも目安なので、無理せず、自分のペースと可能な距離の範囲でお楽しみください。スタート地点もTPPGではなくても大丈夫（フィルムのお渡しはできません）。必要であれば途中で電車やタクシーを使ってもOK! 児童養護施設について思いを巡らせながら、写真を撮る旅をとにかく楽しんでください!
Camera Notes / カメラの注意:
Please bring your own cameras. If you don’t have a camera, borrow one! Don’t have a film camera? Shoot digital! Use your phone! Anything is ok! Best to avoid tripods and cumbersome rigs. Go for light and easy!
ご自身のカメラをご用意ください。もしフィルムカメラがなければ、カメラ好きに借りてください! それも難しければ、デジタルカメラでも、携帯カメラでも! どんなカメラでも大丈夫です! ただし三脚などは避けてなるべく身軽に動けるものでお願いします。二万歩以上歩くのですから!
Covid Notes / 感染対策について
We wish and expect this to be a safe event. PHOTOPEACE is implementing infection prevention measures based on the Guidelines for the Prevention of the Spread of the New Coronavirus Infection of Tokyo. Please be mindful of distancing, and please minimize risk by masking up! Also, If you have a temperature of 37.5° or higher, or if you have any physical symptoms, please refrain from participating and take care of yourself! Thank you. If you don’t wish to take these precautions, please support us from home.
